A Bachelor of Science typically takes three years to complete, with the option to also complete one year of honours for a total of four years. An Associate Degree in Engineering typically takes four years part-time to complete.

Geologists study the nature, composition and structure of the earth to increase scientific knowledge, locate materials and minerals, and advise on the extraction of minerals, environmental protection and rehabilitation of land after mining.

  • Explore specific areas of the earth to work out its structure and the types of rocks or minerals that exist
  • Study rock cores, cuttings and samples
  • Study fossilised life forms and date rock strata
  • Locate and manage groundwater resources, investigate groundwater contamination and land salinity
  • Use analytical techniques to collect data on samples and use computers and modelling to integrate and interpret data sets of geological information
  • Prepare geological reports and maps

An associate degree or bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline. This could be an Associate Degree in Engineering Geology, a Bachelor of Science majoring in Earth Science or Geology, or a Bachelor of Geology.
