An apprenticeship is usually four years, and will include some structured training through a registered training organisation to complete a Certificate III in Automotive Diesel Engine Technology
Heavy diesel fitters are a mechanical tradesperson who has specialised to repair and maintain heavy vehicles or plant equipment. Their role is to ensure this equipment is operating effectively, by conducting inspections, diagnosing and repairing faults, dismantle and rebuild engines and components and perform routine maintenance.
- Diagnose, overhaul, repair, tune, maintain and test vehicles, including trucks, buses, bulldozers and other earthmoving equipment
- Detect mechanical and electrical faults by using instruments that check charging and starting circuitry, batteries, ignition and ignition timing, fuel systems, etc.
- Repair and maintain the hydraulic components of engines that are used to power attachments
- Use oxy, electric, TIG and MIG welding, hand fitting or machining processes to replace or repair faulty parts
To become a Heavy Diesel Fitter you’re required to complete an apprenticeship and obtain relevant vocational qualifications
